Sedation Dentistry

Serenity Advanced Dentistry · Stroudsburg & Bethlehem, PA

You deserve dental care without the dread.

Whatever has kept you out of the dental chair — fear, embarrassment, bad memories, or simply not knowing where to start — we have helped patients through all of it. You are not alone, and we are not here to judge.

Most people don’t avoid the dentist because they don’t care about their health. They avoid it because something — a feeling, a memory, a fear — makes the idea feel impossible. Sedation dentistry exists specifically for those moments. It is safe, effective, and available to you here.

01  ·  DENTAL ANXIETY

If you panic in the dental chair

The racing heart. The gripping of the armrests. The urge to bolt before the appointment even begins. Dental anxiety isn’t something you can simply ‘get over’ — it is a genuine physiological response, and it affects far more people than you might think.

You are not being dramatic. You are not weak. And you should not have to white-knuckle your way through something that exists to help you.

Within minutes of your sedative taking effect, the tension lifts. You remain comfortable and responsive, but the alarm system in your mind quiets down. Many patients describe it as feeling calm for the first time in a dental chair — and are genuinely surprised by how manageable the experience feels.

OUR APPROACH FOR YOU: Nitrous oxide (laughing gas) works quickly and wears off fast — ideal for mild-to-moderate anxiety. For deeper fear, oral sedation or IV sedation offers a more profound sense of calm. Dr. Taormina will help you find the right level at your consultation.

02  ·  LONG ABSENCE

If you’ve avoided the dentist for years

A year turns into two. Two turns into five. Somewhere along the way, returning starts to feel more daunting than staying away — because now you’re carrying the weight of everything that might have happened in the meantime.

We want you to know: this is one of the most common situations we encounter. We have welcomed patients who haven’t seen a dentist in a decade or more, and we approach every one of those appointments with patience, not judgment.

Sedation removes the emotional barrier that makes calling us feel impossible. It makes the first appointment manageable. And once you’ve had one comfortable visit, the second one is always easier.

OUR APPROACH FOR YOU: We start with a calm, no-pressure consultation. No work happens until you’re ready. Oral sedation is often the ideal choice for patients returning after a long gap — it creates a relaxed, hazy experience with little memory of the procedure afterward.

03  ·  SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS

If you’re embarrassed about your teeth

Shame is one of the most powerful forces that keeps people from seeking care. If you’re worried about what we’ll think, what we’ll say, or how we’ll react — please hear this clearly: we will not make you feel ashamed. Ever.

Dental professionalssee every possible condition every day. Our only concern is helping you get to a healthier, more confident place. The state of your teeth today is far less important to us than making sure you feel safe enough to let us help.

When you’re sedated, the self-consciousness tends to dissolve along with the anxiety. You’re not worrying about reactions or responses — you’re simply comfortable. That relaxed state makes it easier for us to do thorough, careful work.

OUR APPROACH FOR YOU: We have a strict no-judgment environment and a team trained in compassionate care. Sedation at whatever level suits you — from light nitrous to deeper oral sedation — ensures that shame doesn’t stand between you and a healthy smile.

04  ·  EXTENSIVE TREATMENT

If you need a lot of work done

Being told you need multiple procedures can feel overwhelming — both emotionally and logistically. Multiple appointments. Multiple rounds of anxiety. Multiple days off work. For many patients, the scope of treatment is itself the reason they don’t start.

Sedation changes that equation significantly. Under sedation, you can comfortably tolerate longer appointments — meaning Dr. Taormina can often complete several procedures in a single visit that would otherwise require many separate sessions.

Patients under IV sedation often feel as though only minutes have passed, even when hours of complex work have been completed. That’s hours of your life back, and fewer times you have to work up the courage to come in.

OUR APPROACH FOR YOU: IV sedation is particularly well-suited for extensive treatment plans. It provides the deepest level of relaxation while keeping you safely responsive, and allows Dr. Taormina to accomplish significantly more in a single visit.

05  ·  PAST TRAUMA

If past dental experiences left their mark

Maybe a procedure went badly. Maybe you felt ignored when you said you were in pain. Maybe someone was unkind. Those experiences are real, and the way they stay with you is real too.

We understand that trust, once broken, takes time to rebuild. We don’t expect you to walk in and immediately feel comfortable. What we can promise is that we will move at your pace, explain everything before we do it, and stop if you need us to.

For patients with dental trauma, sedation does something particularly meaningful — it prevents new negative memories from forming. Many patients report that after a sedated appointment here, the old associations begin to loosen their grip.

OUR APPROACH FOR YOU: We recommend beginning with a conversation — no chair, no instruments, just a talk. From there, we’ll build a care plan together. IV sedation or oral sedation provides the deepest protection from distressing new experiences while we earn your trust.

06  ·  PHYSICAL CHALLENGES

If you have a sensitive gag reflex or can’t sit still

Not every barrier to dental care is psychological. A strong gag reflex can make even a routine cleaning feel impossible. Conditions that make it difficult to sit still for extended periods — whether neurological, physical, or simply the result of chronic pain — present genuine challenges that deserve real solutions.

These aren’t excuses. They’re physical realities, and treating them as such is part of what makes our approach different.

Sedation significantly reduces the gag reflex response and makes it much easier to remain comfortable and still throughout a procedure. It creates the physiological conditions that allow treatment to happen — treatment that might otherwise be impossible.

OUR APPROACH FOR YOU: Nitrous oxide is often effective for gag reflex concerns. For patients who struggle to sit still due to physical or neurological conditions, oral or IV sedation provides more complete relief. We’ll discuss your specific situation to find the right fit.

Three Levels of Sedation — One Right Fit for You

At your consultation, we’ll talk through your history, your concerns, and your procedure to recommend the level that makes the most sense for you.

Nitrous Oxide  ·  Light Sedation

Inhaled through a small mask, nitrous oxide — commonly called laughing gas — creates a pleasant sense of calm and mild euphoria within minutes. It wears off almost immediately after the mask is removed, so you can drive yourself home. A wonderful first step for patients with moderate anxiety or sensitivity.

Oral Sedation  ·  Moderate Sedation

A prescribed medication taken by mouth before your appointment. By the time you arrive, you’ll feel deeply relaxed — drowsy but still conscious. Most patients have little to no memory of the procedure. You’ll need a driver, but many patients describe this as the most peaceful dental experience they’ve ever had.

IV Sedation  ·  Deep Sedation

Administered intravenously by our trained team, IV sedation works rapidly and can be precisely adjusted throughout your appointment. You enter a twilight state — profoundly relaxed, able to respond if asked, but with virtually no awareness or memory of the procedure. Ideal for severe anxiety, extensive treatment, or past trauma.

A Few Things We Want You to Know

✓  Sedation dentistry is very safe. Our team is trained in sedation protocols and monitors you continuously throughout every procedure.

✓  You won’t feel judged here. Our entire team is trained in compassionate, patient-first care. Whatever state your teeth are in, we’ve seen it, and we’re here to help — not evaluate.

✓  You stay in control. Sedation doesn’t mean unconscious. You can communicate, signal us to pause, and feel confident that we’re listening.

✓  Your health history is reviewed first. Before recommending any sedation option, Dr. Taormina reviews your full health history to ensure the safest, most appropriate approach.

✓  Insurance may help cover costs. Sedation coverage varies by plan. We’ll help you understand your options and explore payment solutions so cost doesn’t become another barrier.

✓  You can take it as slowly as you need. There’s no pressure to commit to a full treatment plan on your first visit. Some patients just need a conversation before they’re ready — and that’s completely fine.
